Narrative Writing: Source Material

Description

In this lesson, students continue to examine source material related to the moon landing in order to prepare for their own narrative drafts. In pairs or small groups, students read and discuss the first third of the article “The Flight of Apollo 11” by Kenneth F. Weaver (from “Two thousand feet above the Sea of Tranquility” to “settled just an inch or two into the surface”). This article describes the descent of the lunar lander and the steps the astronauts took to successfully land it. Students then examine iconic photographs of the moon landing and discuss them in groups.
