In this lesson, students read and analyze the article “Firing, Not Hiring” by Nancy Hayes, which describes the effects of the Great Depression on average Americans and explains some of its causes. Building on skills developed in previous lessons, students work in pairs or small groups to read and analyze the article. Students add to their Subtopics and Evidence Charts or their own organizing tools, recording the subtopics and evidence from the article “Firing, Not Hiring.”
