Description
Students examine what it means to have the same area and same volume in terms of slices. This examination results in the two principles: the principle of parallel slices and Cavalieri’s principle. Cavalieri’s principle is used to justify why the volume of any cylinder, not just right cylinders as proposed so far in this module, is area of base × height. Neither of these principles is rigorously proven, but rather, they are among the assumptions used in later proofs, such as the proof for the volume of a sphere.
