In Grade 8, students proved the Pythagorean theorem using what they knew about similar triangles. The basis of this proof is the same, but students are better prepared to understand the proof because of their work in Lesson 23. This proof differs from what students did in Grade 8 because it uses knowledge of ratios within similar triangles and more advanced algebraic skills.
The proof of the Pythagorean theorem and the Exploratory Challenge addressing special right triangles are the essential components of this lesson. Exercises 1–3 and the bullet points in the Discussion between the exercises can be moved to the Problem Set if necessary.
