The Most Important Property of Logarithms

Description

In the previous lesson, students discovered that for logarithms base 10, log(10𝑘 ∙ 𝑥) = 𝑘 + log(𝑥). In this lesson, this result is extended to develop the most important property of logarithms: log(𝑥𝑦) = log(𝑥)+ log(𝑦). Additionally, students discover the reciprocal property of logarithms: log ( 1 𝑥 ) = −log(𝑥). Students continue to hone their skills at observing and generalizing patterns in this lesson as they create tables of logarithms and observe patterns.
