Estimating Centers and Interpreting the Mean as a Balance Point

Description

This lesson continues the work started in Lesson 2 by presenting nearly symmetrical data distributions in which the mean is a reasonable description of a typical value and skewed data distributions in which the median is a reasonable description.

This lesson reviews and deepens understanding of the mean as a balance point as was introduced in Grade 6. The concept of balance is developed by using a dot plot and a representation of the data as equal weights along a number line. Balance would be a position on the number line in which the sum of the distances on the right and the sum of the distances on the left are equal. Students model with mathematics as they verify this position.
