This is the second lesson in which students read the article “Award-Winning Survival Skills.” In this lesson, students reread to determine the meaning of challenging vocabulary in the following sections of the text: the opening; “Best Special Effect: The three-banded armadillo”; “Best Impersonator: The mimic octopus”; and “Best Action Hero: The spiny puffer fish” (for homework).

Each resource contains scaffolds at multiple levels of language acquisition and describes the linguistic demands of the standards to help ELA teachers as well as ESL/bilingual teachers scaffold content for their English learning students.
