Description
In this lesson, students read part 2, paragraphs 13–14 of “Civil Disobedience,” in which Thoreau recounts his night in prison, and explains how this experience influenced his perspective on his relationship to the state. Students discuss and analyze how Thoreau develops his point of view that the individual cannot be controlled by the state.
