In this lesson, students analyze the remainder of the Introduction of The New Jim Crow, pages 12–19, in which Alexander explains her purpose for writing and outlines her argument. Students analyze and discuss Alexander’s use of rhetoric to clarify her purpose and then examine the chapter summaries at the end of the Introduction.
