Assessing Arguments

Description

In this first lesson of the module, students build the background knowledge critical for accessing the nuances of the argument presented in this module’s core text, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Students discuss two readings from the previous lesson’s homework, “The Caste System” and “Jim Crow Laws,” and make connections between these two concepts. Then, students examine the title and Preface of The New Jim Crow before engaging in a discussion connecting all three readings.
