The Role of Figurative Language

Description

In this lesson, students read and analyze the second half of paragraph 2 of “Of Our Spiritual Strivings” in which Du Bois develops his metaphor of the “veil” as he describes the experience of being an “outcast and a stranger” in the “pale world” (par. 2). Students analyze Du Bois’s use of figurative language, determining meaning from context, and analyzing the role this language plays in the text.
