In this lesson, students read and analyze paragraphs 6–7 of the “Atlanta Compromise Speech”, in which Washington explores the relationship between the advancement of African Americans and Southern progress. Student analysis focuses on Washington’s word choice and use of rhetoric, and how each contributes to the power or persuasiveness of his text.
