In this lesson, students read and analyze the remainder of paragraph 8 and the first half of paragraph 9, in which Du Bois introduces the key metaphor of “the mountain path to Canaan” (par. 8) to explain African Americans’ progress through education. Students consider how Du Bois uses and refines this metaphor.
