In this lesson, students continue to read and analyze another excerpt from The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in which Skloot describes cases of HeLa cell misuse and explores issues of informed consent and human experimentation. Students explore this passage through a series of questions and discussion, in which they analyze how Skloot supports a perspective through description and use of language. Students continue to surface issues that emerge from the text and record these issues on their Surfacing Issues Tool.
