In this lesson, students read and analyze William Carlos Williams’s poem, “Raleigh Was Right,” in which Williams contributes a new perspective on the exchange between Christopher Marlowe and Sir Walter Raleigh that emerges from their poems, “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” and “The Nymph’s Reply to the Shepherd.” Students work in small groups to analyze how Williams uses details, figurative language, and shifting speakers to develop a central idea.
